It has emerged that several Welsh Universities are accepting students with low academic grades onto university courses. The Institutions accepting some students with a mere 80 UCAS points the equivalent of two E grades, include Swansea Metropolitan, Aberystwyth University and the University of Wales, Trinity Saint David.
Shadow Education Minister Angela Burns condemned the practice saying ‘While every student should have the opportunity to apply to university, there is a firm expectation that places should be awarded on merit and a certain standard of achievement’.
As I understand it the offer of a university place with reduced grades was following successful completion of a university summer school targeted at pupils from disadvantaged areas. However I do wonder whether such a policy could have a detrimental impact on the quality of students attending the institution as well as impacting upon the reputation of courses and quality of award given.
