Hywel Dda Health Board Downgrade Services

Hywel Dda Health Board today announced sweeping changes to its services it provides in mid and west Wales. Choosing to close the Minor Injury units in Pembroke Dock and Tenby consolidating services in Pembrokeshire at Withybush Hospital instead.

Other controversial changes to services include centralising specialist services, such as the closure of the special care baby unit with care being transferred to Glangwilli Hospital in Carmarthenshire. Having personally participated in the campaign to prevent the closure of the special care baby unit, I am disappointed in the decision taken by the health board to remove services from Pembrokeshire.

However they spin it, these changes are simply downgrading services, Lesley Griffiths the Welsh Health Minister has questions to answer, in regards to downgrading health provision in a rural area with poor transport links.

No hospital in Wales has lost more services in the last 5 years than Prince Philip Hospital Llanelli. together with Ammanford nearly a third of the whole population of Hywel Dda. Llanelli district alone has 79,000 people now having to travel up to 25 miles for A&E. We need to unite across Wales set up a fund to fight these changes. Glangwili sits in the lowest catchment area of all the hospitals and only has a larger hospital because it was a military hospital during the last world war.

All the evidence points to specialist units having better outcomes. It is natural for people to be fearful when hospitals change, but in 20 years time there will probably be children alive in Pembrokeshire who wouldn’t have made it but for a state of the art specialist unit. You can’t have one in every hospital and Glanwili is more central for the whole of South West Wales than Withybush. Of course it would have been great to have the unit at Withybush, but now the decision has been made we should all accept it and do everything we can to ensure that the unit at Glanwili is the best Special Care Baby Unit in Wales.
